Blue Panaque Pleco

The Blue Panaque Pleco is one of the most extraordinary catfish in the aquarium hobby — a large, slate-blue armored pleco from Colombia's Rio Magdalena system that possesses one of the most unusual dietary adaptations in the fish world: it eats wood. Panaque cochliodon is a xylophagous species, meaning it actively consumes and digests driftwood using specialized gut bacteria, a trait shared by only a handful of fish species on Earth. Watching a Blue Panaque methodically rasp through a piece of hardwood with its powerful spoon-shaped teeth is a genuinely singular aquarium experience.

The coloration is distinctive and handsome: a deep blue-grey body with subtle darker patterning and vivid red-orange eyes that provide a striking contrast. At a maximum size of approximately seventeen inches, this is a substantial fish that commands attention in any large aquarium setup. The body is heavily armored with thick, interlocking scutes that give the fish a rugged, prehistoric appearance entirely appropriate for a species whose lineage extends back millions of years.

A minimum 75-gallon aquarium is required, with larger tanks preferred for adult specimens. Temperature should be maintained between 72 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. The single most important element of the habitat is driftwood — and lots of it. Malaysian driftwood, mopani wood, and other hardwoods should be provided in abundance as both food source and territorial structure. The fish will actively consume and hollow out driftwood over time.

Supplement the wood-based diet with sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, sweet potato, cucumber), and occasional frozen bloodworms. Despite being primarily xylophagous, they benefit from dietary variety.

The Blue Panaque is territorial with conspecifics and other large plecos, so provide ample space and multiple driftwood structures.
