Betta splendens
The Dumbo Ear Betta — also known as the Elephant Ear Betta — is one of the most whimsical and endearing varieties of Betta splendens, distinguished by dramatically oversized pectoral fins that extend outward from the body like a pair of delicate, translucent wings. Where most bettas use their pectoral fins as functional but unremarkable steering aids, the Dumbo Ear's pectorals are a primary visual feature — large, often colourful, and constantly in motion as the fish "rows" through the water with a distinctive, almost bird-like wingbeat. The effect is immediately charming and utterly unique in the betta world. The Fish Collection sources our Dumbo Ear Bettas from Thai breeders who have stabilised the oversized pectoral trait while maintaining strong body colour, fin form, and overall health.

The effect is immediately charming and utterly unique in the betta world. The genetics of the Dumbo Ear phenotype involve a mutation that causes the pectoral fins to grow significantly larger than normal. In the best specimens, the pectoral fins are as large as — or larger than — the fish's head, and they may be solid-coloured, bicoloured, or cellophane (translucent), creating different visual effects depending on the individual. Some of the most prized Dumbo Ears feature pectorals that contrast with the body colour — for example, a deep blue body with white or pastel pectorals creates a striking two-toned effect that highlights the oversized fins as a distinct design element rather than simply enlarged versions of the body colour.
The swimming behaviour of a Dumbo Ear Betta is genuinely different from other betta varieties and is a significant part of their appeal. The oversized pectoral fins create a rowing motion that is more prominent and visible than the subtle pectoral movements of standard bettas. The fish appears to "fly" through the water, with each pectoral stroke clearly visible. This distinctive locomotion, combined with the frequent independent movement of the two pectorals, gives the Dumbo Ear a personality and presence that many keepers describe as more engaging and interactive than other betta types.
Housing follows standard betta requirements with attention to flow considerations. The oversized pectoral fins create more drag than standard fins, meaning Dumbo Ear Bettas are not strong swimmers and struggle in any significant current. Filtration output should be gentle and ideally baffled. A minimum 5-gallon heated aquarium with stable temperature between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provides the right environment. Plants and décor should be smooth — the large pectorals are vulnerable to snagging on rough surfaces or sharp edges. Silk or live plants are mandatory; never use sharp plastic plants with any long-finned betta, but especially not with a Dumbo Ear whose oversized pectorals are constantly in motion and therefore at constant risk of contact with surrounding objects.
Diet is standard betta fare: quality pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. The Dumbo Ear's distinctive feeding behaviour — rowing forward to intercept food with its wingbeat motion — makes feeding time a particularly entertaining daily ritual.
The Fish Collection ships all bettas individually in insulated containers with heat packs and our live arrival guarantee.
