Our verdict

Brand-new to fishkeeping? Start with angelfish — hardier, cheaper, and very forgiving. Want a calmer, statement centrepiece and happy to do weekly water changes? Discus are worth it.

Common questions

Can discus and angelfish live together?

We don’t recommend it. Discus want warmer, softer water (82–86°F) than angelfish prefer, and faster-moving angelfish outcompete discus at feeding time. Both do far better in a tank planned around their own needs.

Are discus harder to keep than angelfish?

Yes. Discus are rated Advanced because they need pristine, warm, soft water and consistent weekly water changes. Freshwater angelfish are Intermediate — they tolerate a wider range of parameters and forgive the occasional missed maintenance day.

Which is better for beginners, discus or angelfish?

Angelfish. They start around $50, settle into a standard 55-gallon community setup, and handle beginner mistakes. Treat discus as your second-year fish — once weekly water changes are already a habit.
