Galaxy Koi Plakat Betta
Betta splendens
Betta splendens
The Giant Betta — also known as the King Betta — is the supersized expression of Betta splendens, a selectively bred variant that reaches 4 to 5 inches in total length, roughly double the size of a standard betta. The first time you see a Giant Betta in person, the scale shift is genuinely surprising — everything about the fish is amplified. The body is thick and powerful, the fins are proportionally larger, and the flaring display is transformed from a charming nano-fish behaviour into something closer to a genuine threat display. Giant Bettas carry the same colour genetics as standard-sized bettas, meaning they are available in the full spectrum of colours and patterns, but the increased body area means there is simply more canvas for colour to express itself. The Fish Collection sources our Giant Bettas from Thai breeders who have established reliable giant lines through years of selective breeding for size without sacrificing colour quality or fin form.

The Giant Betta phenotype was developed in Thailand through a straightforward but patient selective breeding programme: breed the largest individuals from each generation together, cull aggressively for size, and repeat over many generations. The result is a fish that is genetically Betta splendens in every respect — same species, same care requirements, same behaviour — but significantly larger. Giants are not a separate species or a hybrid; they are simply the extreme end of the Betta splendens size distribution, fixed through selective pressure. This means all the colour genetics, fin types, and behavioural traits of standard bettas are available in giant form, though the breeding community for giants is smaller, so the variety of available colours may be more limited at any given time.
Housing a Giant Betta requires scaling up from the standard betta setup. A minimum 10-gallon aquarium is recommended — the 5-gallon tanks suitable for standard bettas feel cramped for a fish of this size. Filtration should be appropriately sized, and the heater must be rated for the larger water volume. Temperature, pH, and general water chemistry requirements are identical to standard bettas: 76 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH 6.5 to 7.5, with weekly water changes of twenty-five to fifty percent. Decorations and plants should be proportional to the fish — what provides adequate cover for a 3-inch betta may feel exposed for a 5-inch giant.
One behavioural note: Giant Bettas can be more aggressive and more physically capable of damaging tankmates than standard-sized bettas. Their larger mouths and stronger jaws mean they can injure or consume small fish and invertebrates that a standard betta might ignore. Tankmate selection requires extra caution, and many giant betta keepers opt for a species-only setup to avoid risk.
Diet follows standard betta nutrition but in larger portions: quality betta pellets (larger pellet sizes are appropriate), frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Giants are enthusiastic feeders with correspondingly larger appetites, but overfeeding must still be managed. Feed twice daily, only what the fish consumes in two to three minutes.
The Fish Collection ships all bettas individually in insulated containers with heat packs and our live arrival guarantee.
