The Royal Pleco is a magnificent wood-eating catfish that combines dramatic appearance with one of the most unusual dietary specializations in the freshwater world. Panaque nigrolineatus features a robust, armored body decorated with bold, light-colored stripes on a dark background — a pattern that varies significantly across its wide South American range, giving rise to numerous regional variants and L-numbers that collectors avidly pursue. In the aquarium, this means driftwood is not merely decoration but a dietary requirement. The fish will systematically rasp surfaces, producing fine wood shavings that pass through the digestive system. Mopani wood, Malaysian driftwood, and other hardwoods should be present in the tank at all times. The rasping behavior produces a distinctive sound — a rhythmic scraping that experienced keepers find oddly soothing.

Tank requirements scale with the fish's eventual size. Royal Plecos reach 12 to 17 inches in captivity depending on the specific variant, necessitating a minimum 125-gallon aquarium for a single adult. Juveniles can be started in smaller tanks but will need upgrades within one to two years. The aquarium should feature multiple pieces of large driftwood, rock caves, and dim lighting. Royal Plecos are nocturnal and become stressed under bright light without adequate shelter. A heavily shaded tank with subdued lighting produces the most natural behavior.

Water parameters should lean toward the soft, acidic conditions of the species' native rivers. Temperature between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water are ideal. Filtration must handle the significant amount of wood waste these fish produce — the combination of rasping and normal metabolic waste creates a higher-than-average bioload for a fish of this size. Weekly water changes of twenty-five to thirty percent are essential.

Diet combines wood rasping with supplemental feeding. While wood is the primary food source and gut health maintainer, Royal Plecos also require sinking vegetables — blanched zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato, and algae wafers are all accepted. Some keepers supplement with frozen foods, though the species is primarily herbivorous. Feed in the evening as the fish becomes active.
