Cross River Puffer

The Cross River Puffer is one of the rarest and most spectacular freshwater pufferfish available in the aquarium trade — a large, boldly patterned species endemic to the Cross River system in southeastern Nigeria. With a dark olive-to-black body covered in vivid yellow-gold spots and lines, and a maximum size of approximately twelve inches, this is a commanding presence in any large aquarium. Its rarity in the wild and the difficulty of collection make it a genuine prize for serious pufferfish enthusiasts.

Tetraodon pustulatus is found only in a limited stretch of the Cross River and its tributaries, making it one of the most geographically restricted pufferfish species in the world. Wild populations face pressure from habitat degradation, and captive breeding has proven extremely difficult. Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught, and availability is sporadic and unpredictable. When they appear on the market, experienced collectors act quickly.

A minimum 75-gallon aquarium is required for an adult Cross River Puffer. Temperature should be maintained between 75 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Unlike some African puffers, this species does best in soft to moderately hard freshwater without salt addition. Strong filtration is essential — pufferfish are messy eaters that produce significant waste.

Diet revolves around hard-shelled foods: snails, crayfish, clams, mussels, and shrimp form the core. Supplemental offerings of frozen krill, silversides, and earthworms round out the menu. As with all pufferfish, regular access to hard-shelled prey is essential for dental maintenance, as the beak-like teeth grow continuously.

This is an aggressive, territorial species best kept alone or with robust, fast-moving tankmates in significantly larger systems.
