The Starry Night Cichlid is one of the most visually arresting freshwater fish on Earth — a jet-black cichlid scattered with hundreds of brilliant gold or white spots that evoke a clear night sky and have earned it the common name that requires no further explanation. Paratilapia polleni is endemic to Madagascar, one of the most biologically unique islands on the planet, and this geographical isolation has produced a fish that looks and behaves unlike any other cichlid in the hobby. The visual impact of a mature Starry Night Cichlid is extraordinary. Juveniles begin as relatively plain silver-grey fish with only hints of spotting, but as they mature, the body darkens to an intense black and the spots emerge in ever-increasing density and brilliance. A fully mature male in breeding condition is one of the most stunning sights in freshwater fishkeeping — the contrast between the coal-black body and the constellation of luminous spots creates an effect that photographs simply cannot capture. Tankmates must be chosen carefully — robust, similarly sized fish that can hold their own are essential. Suitable companions include large catfish, other aggressive cichlids of similar size, and armored species.

Feeding is uncomplicated. The Starry Night Cichlid is a carnivore that thrives on a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen shrimp, bloodworms, and occasional live foods. Feed once or twice daily, offering only what the fish can consume in a few minutes. Color-enhancing foods with astaxanthin and spirulina can help intensify the spotting pattern and maintain the deep black body coloration.

Water parameters should reflect tropical freshwater conditions: 72 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 7.0 to 8.0, and moderate hardness. The Starry Night Cichlid is reasonably adaptable but performs best in clean, well-oxygenated water with efficient filtration. Weekly water changes of 25 to 30 percent are standard. The aquarium should include rock formations and driftwood to create territorial boundaries and visual barriers, reducing aggression in community settings.
