Clown Knife Fish
Chitala ornata
Apteronotus albifrons
The Black Ghost Knife Fish is one of the most hauntingly beautiful freshwater species available to aquarists — a sleek, jet-black phantom that glides through the water column with an undulating ribbon fin that appears to defy conventional fish locomotion. Apteronotus albifrons belongs to the order Gymnotiformes, the South American knifefish, and possesses a weak electric organ that it uses not for offense but for navigation and communication in the murky, root-tangled waterways of the Amazon basin. Watching a Black Ghost Knife Fish move through a dimly lit aquarium is an experience that borders on the surreal — the fish seems to hover, reverse, and pivot in ways that no other aquarium species can replicate.

The Fish Collection sources our Black Ghost Knife Fish from established breeding facilities in South America that prioritize healthy, well-conditioned specimens. Each fish we offer has been quarantined for a minimum of two weeks and is eating frozen foods enthusiastically before being listed for sale. The specimen you receive will be actively feeding and fully acclimated to captive conditions — a critical advantage over wild-caught fish that may refuse food for weeks after collection.
In the aquarium, the Black Ghost Knife Fish requires a minimum 75-gallon tank, though we recommend 125 gallons for a full-grown adult that can reach 20 inches in length. These are nocturnal fish that spend daylight hours hidden in caves, tubes, or dense vegetation, emerging at dusk to patrol the tank and hunt. Provide plenty of hiding spots — PVC tubes, driftwood caves, and dense plant thickets are all excellent options. A ghost knife that lacks adequate shelter will be perpetually stressed, pale in color, and reluctant to feed.
Water parameters should reflect the species' Amazonian origins. Temperature between 73 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water will keep the fish comfortable. The electric organ that makes this species so fascinating also makes it unusually sensitive to certain medications — copper-based treatments and many common ich medications are lethal to knifefish. If disease treatment becomes necessary, consult a specialist before adding any chemicals to the tank.
Diet consists primarily of meaty foods. In the wild, A. albifrons feeds on insect larvae, small crustaceans, and worms. In captivity, offer frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and high-quality sinking pellets. Live blackworms are an excellent conditioning food. Feed after lights-out when the fish is naturally active and hunting. A well-fed Black Ghost Knife Fish develops a robust, slightly rounded body profile — if the fish appears pinched behind the head, increase feeding frequency.
The cultural significance of this species adds another dimension to its appeal. In parts of South America, local communities believe the ghosts of departed loved ones inhabit these fish, hence the common name. Whether or not you subscribe to the folklore, there is something undeniably spectral about watching this fish materialize from the shadows of a darkened aquarium. The Fish Collection ships all knifefish in darkened, insulated containers to minimize transit stress, with our standard live arrival guarantee.
