Angel Koi Fish

The Angel Koi Fish — more commonly known as the Koi Angelfish — is one of the most popular and recognizable freshwater angelfish varieties, beloved for its striking calico-like pattern of orange, white, and black that evokes the ornamental koi carp of Japanese garden ponds. Each specimen displays a unique arrangement of these three colors, making every fish a one-of-a-kind combination. The orange patches range from pale peach to deep tangerine, the white areas are clean and bright, and the black markings provide bold contrast that ties the pattern together.

This tank-bred strain of Pterophyllum scalare has been developed over many generations of selective breeding, with breeders working to increase the intensity and coverage of the orange coloration while maintaining the distinctive tri-color pattern. Premium specimens — the caliber we select for The Fish Collection — show vibrant, well-distributed color patches with clean transitions between hues. Fish with muddy, brownish orange or excessive black are not selected.

Housing follows standard freshwater angelfish guidelines: a minimum 55-gallon aquarium with at least 18 inches of vertical water depth. Temperature should be maintained between 75 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Angelfish are relatively adaptable to a range of water conditions, making the Koi Angelfish suitable for intermediate aquarists who have mastered basic tropical fishkeeping.

Diet is omnivorous and straightforward: quality flake foods, sinking and floating pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional live food treats. Feed two to three times daily. The orange coloration benefits from foods containing natural carotenoids, though pattern and intensity are primarily determined by genetics.
