The Pigeon Blood Discus is one of the most recognizable and widely admired discus variants in the hobby — a warm-toned fish whose cream-to-orange body is overlaid with irregular red-orange patterning and fine peppering that creates an appearance reminiscent of the gemstone that inspired its name. Symphysodon aequifasciatus in the Pigeon Blood form emerged from Asian breeding programs in the 1990s and rapidly became one of the most commercially successful discus varieties ever produced. Its popularity endures because the coloration is both striking and unique — no other freshwater fish quite replicates the warm, stippled tones of a well-bred Pigeon Blood. The Pigeon Blood phenotype is characterized by a base color ranging from creamy white to deep orange, overlaid with red-to-orange stippling and peppering across the body and fins. The intensity and distribution of this peppering varies between individuals and breeding lines — some specimens show heavy, uniform peppering across the entire body, while others display cleaner flanks with peppering concentrated on the head and dorsal region. Our specimens represent a balanced aesthetic with moderate, well-distributed peppering and clean orange base coloration.

One characteristic of the Pigeon Blood line that buyers should understand is black peppering — small dark spots that develop on the body over time, particularly in response to stress, poor water quality, or genetic predisposition. While some degree of dark peppering is inherent to the variety, excessive spotting often indicates suboptimal conditions. Clean water, stable temperature, and low stress minimize dark spot development. Care requirements match those of all discus varieties. Temperature is the most critical parameter — maintain between 82 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit, with 84 to 86 degrees being ideal. pH between 6.0 and 7.0, soft water below 8 dGH, and impeccable water quality are all essential. A minimum group of five to six fish in a 55-gallon or larger tank provides the social environment discus require. Bare-bottom tanks facilitate cleaning and are preferred by many serious breeders, though planted setups work well for display purposes.

Diet should be varied and high-quality. Discus-specific granules, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, beef heart mix, and white worms provide complete nutrition. Color-enhancing foods with carotenoids and astaxanthin intensify the warm orange-red tones. Feed three to four times daily for growing juveniles, twice daily for adults. Moderate water changes of thirty to fifty percent should be performed at least every other day for juveniles and two to three times per week for adults.
