The Aba Aba Knife Fish is the largest member of the knife fish family and one of the most imposing freshwater predators available in the aquarium trade. Reaching up to sixty-three inches in captivity, Gymnarchus niloticus is a genuine monster fish that demands infrastructure on par with the largest arowanas and arapaima. Native to the Nile Basin and river systems across West Africa, this species has been known to science since the nineteenth century but remains relatively rare in the hobby due to its extreme space requirements and aggressive disposition.

The Aba Aba possesses a unique elongated, eel-like body with a continuous dorsal fin that runs the length of its back and provides the undulating propulsion characteristic of knife fish locomotion. It navigates using a sophisticated electrosensory system that generates weak electrical fields to map its environment — a biological sonar that allows it to hunt with devastating precision in turbid water. In an aquarium setting, watching this fish hunt is a singular experience.

Housing is the primary challenge. A minimum 300-gallon aquarium is the absolute baseline for juvenile specimens, but adults require 500 gallons or larger — ideally a custom-built system of eight feet or more in length. Temperature should be maintained between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. Filtration must be massively overspecified; we recommend sump systems rated for three times the tank volume.

This is an extremely predatory fish. Any tankmate that can fit in its considerable mouth will be consumed. Even large fish are not safe, as the Aba Aba becomes increasingly territorial and aggressive with age. A species-only setup is the only responsible recommendation.

Diet consists of live and frozen fish, shrimp, earthworms, and large pellets.

Veelgestelde vragen

How big does an Aba Aba Knife Fish get?
The Aba Aba is the largest knife fish species, reaching up to 63 inches (over 5 feet) in captivity. This is a true monster fish that requires a minimum 300-gallon tank for juveniles and 500+ gallons for adults. Custom-built systems are often necessary.
Can Aba Aba Knife Fish live with other fish?
No. The Aba Aba is extremely predatory and increasingly aggressive with age. Any fish that fits in its mouth will be eaten, and it will attack even larger tankmates. A species-only setup is the only responsible recommendation for this species.
What do Aba Aba Knife Fish eat?
Feed live and frozen fish, large shrimp, earthworms, and sinking pellets designed for large predatory fish. Juveniles eat daily; adults can be fed every 2-3 days. Vary the diet to ensure complete nutrition.
Do Aba Aba Knife Fish generate electricity?
Yes — Gymnarchus niloticus generates weak electrical fields for navigation and prey detection, not for stunning prey like an electric eel. This electrosensory system allows the fish to map its environment and hunt with precision in murky water.
