Vampire Pleco

The Vampire Pleco earns its dramatic common name from the pronounced, fang-like odontodes that protrude from its gill covers and pectoral fins — structures that give this striking catfish a genuinely menacing appearance despite its relatively peaceful disposition. Also known as L007 or the Galaxy Pleco, Leporacanthicus galaxias features a jet-black body scattered with bright white or yellow spots that create a starfield pattern against the dark background. The combination of the fanged appearance and celestial patterning makes this one of the most visually compelling L-number plecos available.

Native to the Rio Tocantins in Brazil, the Vampire Pleco inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated waters among rock formations and submerged wood. In the aquarium, replicating these conditions is important: provide strong filtration with moderate to high current, rocky structures with caves, and driftwood for territorial demarcation. A minimum 55-gallon tank is recommended for a single specimen, which can reach approximately nine inches at maturity.

Water conditions should mirror the warm, slightly acidic waters of its origin: temperature between 79 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 5.5 and 7.0. Unlike many plecos, the Vampire Pleco is primarily carnivorous — its unusual dentition is adapted for catching and crushing snails and small invertebrates rather than scraping algae. Feed sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, chopped shrimp, and snails. Supplement with occasional blanched vegetables for dietary balance.

The Vampire Pleco is territorial with conspecifics but generally peaceful toward other species. It can be housed with community fish of similar size, other non-competing plecos, and Amazonian species that share its water chemistry preferences.
