Avocado Puffer

The Avocado Puffer is a sleek, torpedo-shaped freshwater pufferfish from Southeast Asia that earns its common name from its distinctive olive-green coloration — a muted, avocado-like hue that sets it apart from the more boldly patterned pufferfish species. What it lacks in flashy markings it more than compensates for with personality: Avocado Puffers are active, intelligent, and endlessly curious, spending their days patrolling every corner of the aquarium with the alert, inquisitive behavior that makes pufferfish among the most engaging fish in the hobby.

At a maximum size of approximately five inches, the Avocado Puffer occupies a middle ground between the tiny dwarf puffers and the massive Mbu and Fahaka species. It requires a minimum 40-gallon aquarium with good filtration and moderate current. Temperature should be maintained between 73 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.5 and 7.5. This is a true freshwater species — no brackish conditions are needed or desired.

A word of caution regarding tankmates: despite its modest size, the Avocado Puffer is a determined fin nipper and scale biter. It is best kept as a species-only specimen or with fast, robust fish in a significantly larger tank. Many keepers find that a single Avocado Puffer in a well-decorated 40-gallon tank provides the most rewarding experience, as the fish's intelligence and personality are best appreciated when it becomes the sole focus of attention.

Diet must include hard-shelled foods for dental maintenance: small snails, shrimp, and frozen shellfish are essential. Supplement with frozen bloodworms, krill, and the occasional earthworm. Feed daily for juveniles, every other day for adults.
