Cobalt Blue Zebra
Maylandia callainos
Rocio octofasciata
The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey is a selectively bred color morph of the classic Jack Dempsey cichlid that has taken the freshwater hobby by storm — a fish that replaces the standard species' dark, earthy coloration with a breathtaking iridescent blue that shimmers across the entire body like crushed sapphire under aquarium lighting. Rocio octofasciata originates from the Atlantic slope of Central America, from southern Mexico through Honduras, where the wild-type inhabits slow-moving rivers, canals, and swampy lowlands. The Electric Blue variant was developed through decades of selective breeding, isolating and intensifying a recessive gene that produces the spectacular metallic blue coloration.

At The Fish Collection, we source our Electric Blue Jack Dempseys from dedicated breeders who have stabilized the blue gene across multiple generations. Our specimens display the full-body iridescent blue coverage and sparkling blue facial markings that define a quality Electric Blue — not the partial blue coloration that characterizes lower-grade fish. Each specimen is quarantined and confirmed feeding on a varied diet before listing. Maximum size reaches approximately 10 inches, slightly smaller than the standard Jack Dempsey due to the effects of the selective breeding process.
Housing requires a minimum 55-gallon aquarium for a single adult, with 75 gallons or more recommended for a pair. The tank should feature a sand substrate, moderate rockwork and driftwood for territorial boundaries, and areas of open swimming space. Unlike the standard Jack Dempsey, the Electric Blue variant tends to be somewhat less aggressive — though it is still a cichlid with definite territorial instincts, it can often coexist with a broader range of tankmates than its wild-type counterpart.
Water parameters are forgiving: temperature between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 7.0 to 8.0, and soft to moderately hard water. The Electric Blue Jack Dempsey is slightly more sensitive to water quality fluctuations than the standard variety, so consistent maintenance is important. Weekly water changes of 25 percent and robust filtration keep these fish in optimal condition and displaying their best coloration.
Diet is omnivorous. Offer high-quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, and blanched vegetables. Electric Blue Jack Dempseys are eager feeders that accept virtually all prepared and frozen foods. Feed once or twice daily. Their coloration intensifies noticeably on a varied, high-quality diet — fish fed exclusively on basic flake or pellet tend to show muted blue compared to those receiving a rotation of protein and vegetable-based foods.
