This dietary flexibility makes it one of the easiest large cichlids to maintain in captivity. Feed once or twice daily, offering a varied rotation that includes both protein and plant-based foods. Spirulina-enriched foods help maintain and intensify the turquoise coloration.

Water parameters are forgiving and span a wide range: 73 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The Turquoise Severum adapts readily to most municipal water conditions, making it accessible to keepers who do not have access to reverse-osmosis or specialized water treatment systems. Standard filtration rated for the tank volume, combined with weekly water changes of 20 to 25 percent, maintains the conditions this species thrives in.
