What sets the Snowflake Moray apart from most other moray species in the aquarium trade is its dentition. While many morays possess sharp, fang-like teeth designed for seizing fish, E. nebulosa has blunt, molar-like teeth adapted for crushing crustaceans — shrimp, crabs, and shellfish make up the bulk of its natural diet. This dietary specialization has two practical implications: the eel is less likely to consume fish tankmates, and its bite, while powerful and best avoided, lacks the slashing damage potential of its sharp-toothed relatives. This makes the Snowflake Moray one of the most tankmate-compatible moray species available.

Tank requirements center on secure housing and appropriate water volume. A minimum 55-gallon marine aquarium is suitable for a single Snowflake Moray, with 75 gallons or larger being preferable. The rockwork must include caves and crevices for the eel to inhabit — morays spend the majority of their time with their bodies wedged into rock structures, with only the head visible, surveying their surroundings with constant, rhythmic mouth movements that serve to ventilate the gills. Water parameters follow standard marine tropical conditions. Temperature between 72 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Protein skimming and efficient biological filtration are essential, as eels are messy eaters that generate significant organic waste.
