Altum Angelfish

The Altum Angelfish is the true aristocrat of the freshwater angelfish world — a species so dramatically different from the common aquarium angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) that seeing one for the first time is a revelation. Pterophyllum altum is taller, more angular, and more intensely colored than its domesticated cousin, with a body profile that extends to a staggering fifteen inches from dorsal tip to ventral tip. The steep forehead, pronounced notch above the snout, and bold, dark vertical bars against a silver-bronze body create an appearance of regal, wild beauty that no tank-bred scalare can match.

Altum Angelfish are found exclusively in the Orinoco River basin and upper Rio Negro, inhabiting some of the softest, most acidic water in the neotropical realm. This is the key to understanding their care requirements: Altum Angels demand water conditions that most tropical fish would find inhospitable. pH must be maintained between 4.5 and 6.0 — genuinely acidic water that requires RO or RO/DI systems for most hobbyists. Temperature should be kept between 81 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and hardness should be near zero.

A minimum 75-gallon aquarium is required, but the tank dimensions matter more than volume: Altum Angels need vertical space. A tank that is at least 24 inches tall is essential to accommodate their extended finnage. Filtration should be efficient but gentle — these fish dislike strong current. Tall driftwood structures and Amazonian sword plants complement both the aesthetic and environmental needs.

Diet consists of frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, quality flake and pellet foods, and live foods. Altum Angels can be initially reluctant to accept prepared foods, especially wild-caught specimens. Patience during the acclimation period is essential.
