Starfire Red Angelfish

The Starfire Red Angelfish is one of the most vividly colored freshwater angelfish varieties ever produced — a tank-bred Pterophyllum scalare that blazes with intense red-orange coloration covering the entire body, from the forehead through the flanks and into the fins. Unlike the more common Koi Angelfish, which features patchy orange, white, and black markings, the Starfire Red displays a deep, uniform red that has been selectively refined over many generations to produce a fish that looks almost painted with liquid fire.

This strain represents the cutting edge of freshwater angelfish breeding. Achieving consistent, deep red coloration without muddy undertones or blotchy patches requires meticulous genetic selection over many generations. The specimens we offer at The Fish Collection are sourced from breeders who specialize exclusively in red angelfish genetics and select breeding pairs based on coloration intensity, pattern uniformity, and body conformation.

At a maximum height of approximately ten inches from dorsal to ventral tip, the Starfire Red Angelfish makes a commanding presence in any tall aquarium. A minimum 55-gallon tank is recommended, with at least 18 inches of vertical water depth. Temperature should be maintained between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Angelfish are generally adaptable to a range of conditions, making the Starfire Red accessible to intermediate-level aquarists.

Diet is straightforward: quality flake foods, sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and the occasional live food treat. Feed two to three times daily. A varied diet rich in carotenoids supports the red coloration, though genetics are the primary driver.

Temperament is typical of Pterophyllum scalare — generally peaceful but capable of territorial behavior, especially during breeding. Avoid housing with fin-nipping species, as the flowing fins are tempting targets.
