Clown Knife Fish

The Clown Knife Fish is a magnificent predator from Southeast Asia that combines dramatic size with striking ornamentation — a silvery, blade-shaped body adorned with bold, dark-rimmed ocelli that give the species both its common name and its unmistakable visual identity. Chitala ornata is a true showpiece fish that grows large, feeds aggressively, and commands attention in any aquarium. In the wild, C. ornata inhabits the slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and lakes of Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and surrounding regions. It is a crepuscular predator that hunts at dawn and dusk, using a combination of keen eyesight and lateral line sensitivity to ambush prey in dimly lit water. In captivity, this predatory instinct remains fully intact, making feeding time one of the most dramatic moments in the fishkeeping day. A mature Clown Knife Fish strikes with startling speed, engulfing prey in a cavernous mouth that seems disproportionately large for its streamlined body.

Tank requirements are substantial. While juveniles can be started in a 75-gallon aquarium, adult Clown Knife Fish routinely reach 24 to 36 inches in captivity, necessitating a minimum 200-gallon tank for long-term housing. A 300-gallon system is preferable for a full-grown specimen. The tank should be dimly lit with ample driftwood and root structures that provide both shelter and visual barriers. Clown Knife Fish are surprisingly skittish for their size — a startled specimen can injure itself by slamming into tank walls, so avoid placing the aquarium in high-traffic areas with sudden movement or bright overhead lighting.

Water parameters are notably flexible. Temperature should range between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Hardness is relatively unimportant — the species adapts to both soft and moderately hard water without difficulty. Filtration must be robust, as Clown Knife Fish are messy eaters that produce significant bioload. Canister filters or sumps rated for at least twice the tank volume are essential.

Diet transitions as the fish grows. Small juveniles accept frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp. As they grow, introduce chopped market shrimp, silversides, tilapia strips, and eventually whole feeder fish from quarantined sources. Our specimens are trained on frozen foods from an early age, which greatly simplifies long-term feeding management. Feed juveniles daily and adults two to three times per week. Monitor body condition — a healthy Clown Knife Fish has a smoothly convex belly profile without appearing bloated.

The Clown Knife Fish is not a community fish in any conventional sense. Tankmates must be large enough to avoid predation and robust enough to share space with a territorial predator. Large cichlids, full-grown Arowana, and similarly sized catfish are appropriate companions.
