The Motoro Stingray is the gateway species for freshwater ray keeping — widely available compared to its rarer cousins, yet no less captivating in its own right. Potamotrygon motoro displays a warm brown to olive disc covered in distinctive ocelli — eyespot markings ringed in orange or gold that create a mesmerizing pattern unique to each individual. No two Motoro Stingrays look exactly alike, which gives every specimen a fingerprint-level individuality that collectors find deeply appealing. Potamotrygon motoro has the widest natural distribution of any South American freshwater ray, found across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná river basins. This broad range has produced considerable regional variation in color and pattern. Specimens from the upper Amazon tend toward darker base coloration with smaller, more numerous ocelli, while those from the Paraná drainage often display lighter backgrounds with larger, bolder markings. Our current stock derives from captive-bred lines that emphasize high-contrast ocelli on a clean brown background — the most popular aesthetic among ray enthusiasts.

Tank requirements for the Motoro are substantial but less extreme than for some Potamotrygon species. A minimum 125-gallon aquarium is acceptable for a juvenile, but plan for 200 gallons or more as the animal matures to its adult disc width of roughly fifteen inches. As with all rays, floor space trumps water column height. A wide, shallow tank with fine sand substrate provides the ideal environment. Avoid gravel, which can trap waste and harbor bacteria beneath the ray's resting body. Decoration should be minimal — smooth rocks and driftwood positioned around the perimeter, leaving the center open for the ray to patrol and feed.

Water chemistry for P. motoro is forgiving by ray standards. Temperature should range between 76 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with pH between 6.0 and 7.5. While Motoro Stingrays tolerate a broader pH range than some congeners, they remain sensitive to ammonia and nitrite — zero tolerance for both is non-negotiable. Weekly water changes of twenty-five to forty percent, combined with oversized biological and mechanical filtration, will maintain the pristine conditions these animals require.

Feeding is straightforward and one of the joys of ray keeping. Motoro Stingrays are enthusiastic eaters that accept a wide variety of meaty foods including earthworms, shrimp, bloodworms, tilapia, and commercial sinking pellets. Our specimens are already eating frozen foods readily, which simplifies daily husbandry. Juveniles should be fed daily, with adults transitioning to an every-other-day schedule. Watch body condition carefully — a ray whose disc edges appear pinched or concave is underfed, while one that looks puffy around the base of the tail may be receiving too much food.
