Clown Loach
Chromobotia macracanthus
Botia striata
The Zebra Loach is a compact, beautifully patterned bottom-dweller that brings both visual interest and practical utility to community aquariums. Botia striata features a pale golden body crossed by numerous thin, dark vertical bands that give the species its common name — a pattern that, under good conditions, becomes increasingly defined and attractive as the fish matures. Native to the rivers and streams of the Western Ghats in India, this species occupies a niche in the aquarium hobby as a smaller, more manageable alternative to the Clown Loach, while retaining much of the personality and social behavior that makes loaches so popular.

The Fish Collection selects our Zebra Loaches for crisp band definition, active temperament, and robust body condition. Each specimen has been quarantined and is eating prepared foods readily before being offered for sale. The fish you receive will be healthy, acclimated, and ready to integrate into your aquarium without the prolonged settling-in period that can accompany poorly conditioned imports.
At a maximum size of 3.5 to 4 inches, the Zebra Loach is well-suited to moderately sized community tanks. A minimum of 30 gallons is appropriate for a group of five to six specimens, which is the minimum social unit we recommend. Like all Botia species, Zebra Loaches are social fish that exhibit their most natural and entertaining behaviors when kept in groups. They establish a pecking order through ritualized sparring that involves circling and flank displays — vigorous but harmless interactions that are fascinating to observe. Solitary specimens tend to hide excessively and may develop stress-related health issues.
The aquarium should provide a combination of open swimming space and abundant hiding spots. Rocks, caves, driftwood, and dense planting create the complexity these fish prefer. Substrate should be smooth sand or fine gravel — loaches spend considerable time foraging on and through the substrate, and rough materials can damage their sensitive barbels. Moderate water flow is appreciated, mimicking the flowing streams of their natural habitat.
Water parameters are flexible within tropical freshwater ranges. Temperature between 73 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water suit the species well. Zebra Loaches are hardier than many loach species and tolerate minor parameter fluctuations better than their more sensitive cousins, making them a good choice for loach keepers building experience before tackling species like the Clown Loach.
Diet is omnivorous and uncomplicated. Sinking pellets and wafers form the staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched zucchini, and — like their larger Botia relatives — snails. Zebra Loaches are effective pest snail controllers, though their smaller mouth size means they target smaller snail species more efficiently than large ones. The Fish Collection ships Zebra Loaches in insulated bags with our live arrival guarantee.
