Gold Severum Cichlid

The Gold Severum Cichlid is the warm-toned counterpart to the Turquoise Severum — a selectively bred color morph of Heros efasciatus that trades the iridescent green-blue palette for a rich, uniform golden-yellow body that practically radiates warmth under aquarium lighting. This is one of the most popular and widely recognized large cichlids in the freshwater hobby, and for good reason: the Gold Severum combines genuine beauty with an easygoing temperament and care requirements that make it accessible to intermediate keepers while remaining interesting enough to hold the attention of seasoned aquarists.

The Gold Severum's coloration is its signature feature. The body is a deep, saturated gold that covers the flanks, belly, and extends into the fins. In mature specimens, faint orange-red markings often appear on the face and gill plates, adding depth and warmth to the overall appearance. Under proper LED lighting, the scales reflect a subtle metallic sheen that elevates the fish from simply "yellow" to genuinely golden. This coloration is the result of decades of selective breeding that has stabilized the gold phenotype while maintaining the robust health and hardiness of the wild-type Severum.

Adults reach approximately 10 inches and require a 55-gallon or larger aquarium. Like its turquoise sibling, the Gold Severum has a round, discus-like body shape that gives it a substantial visual presence despite its moderate length. The species is an active, intelligent fish that interacts readily with its keeper — recognizing feeding times, responding to movement outside the tank, and displaying a range of color changes that reflect mood and social dynamics.

The Gold Severum's temperament is one of its greatest strengths. It is omnivorous, accepting a wide variety of prepared foods including cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, blanched zucchini, and peas. This dietary flexibility simplifies feeding and ensures the fish receives complete nutrition without specialized or expensive food requirements. Feed once or twice daily, rotating between protein and plant-based offerings.

Water parameters are broad and forgiving: 73 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit, pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. The Gold Severum is one of the hardiest large cichlids available, tolerating a range of conditions that would stress more sensitive species. This adaptability makes it an excellent choice for keepers whose water supply does not naturally match the soft, acidic conditions many South American cichlids prefer. Standard filtration and weekly 20 to 25 percent water changes maintain optimal conditions.

In community settings, the Gold Severum is a model citizen. It is peaceful to mildly territorial, holding its own against medium-aggressive tankmates without initiating conflict. It coexists well with other Severums, large tetras, catfish, loaches, and other robust community species. A pair or small group of Gold Severums in a well-planted 75-gallon or larger tank creates one of the most visually striking and harmonious freshwater displays possible.

With a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, the Gold Severum Cichlid is a reliable, beautiful, and personality-rich addition to any freshwater aquarium. Its combination of accessibility, visual appeal, and genuine character has made it a hobby staple for decades — and its popularity shows no signs of waning.
