Leopard Skin Discus

The Leopard Skin Discus is a captivating spotted strain that breaks from the traditional striped and solid-color Discus varieties with a bold, irregular spotting pattern reminiscent of its big-cat namesake. Red-brown spots of varying size are scattered across a lighter cream-to-gold base, creating a wild, organic appearance that stands apart in any Discus collection. The spots extend into the fins, and the overall effect is both elegant and untamed — a look that appeals to collectors seeking something beyond the clean lines of turquoise and pigeon blood strains.

This strain was developed by crossing red-spotted variants and selecting aggressively for spot density, distribution, and contrast over many generations. The finest Leopard Skin specimens — the standard we hold at The Fish Collection — show well-distributed spots with clean edges against a bright, warm base color. Specimens with blotchy or irregular spot boundaries are culled from our selection process.

Husbandry mirrors all Discus varieties: maintain water temperature between 82 and 88 degrees Fahrenheit, pH between 6.0 and 7.0, and soft to moderately soft water. A minimum 75-gallon tank for a group of five or more fish is the baseline. Discus are sensitive to water quality, so efficient biological filtration and weekly water changes of 30 to 50 percent are mandatory rather than optional.

The Leopard Skin Discus is peaceful and compatible with all other Discus strains, making it an excellent addition to a mixed-strain school. Feed high-quality Discus pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart preparations two to three times daily. A diverse diet supports both immune function and the expression of the spotted pigmentation pattern.
