Motoro vs Black Diamond Stingray
Your first ray, or the collector’s ray?
Our verdict
First stingray? Choose the motoro — it’s the most forgiving ray in the hobby and a fraction of the price. The Black Diamond is the collector’s ray: jet-black polka-dot perfection that demands expert care, a bigger footprint and a bigger budget.
Common questions
Which freshwater stingray is best for beginners?
The Motoro. It tolerates a wider range of water parameters than any other pet ray and starts around $650. No stingray is truly easy — but the motoro forgives the mistakes a first-time ray keeper will make.
Why are Black Diamond stingrays so expensive?
Potamotrygon leopoldi comes from a small stretch of Brazil’s Xingu River, and Brazil banned wild export — so every legal Black Diamond is captive-bred from limited bloodlines. Small litters plus heavy collector demand keep prices at $2,800 and up.
Can Motoro and Black Diamond stingrays live together?
Experienced keepers do combine them — care requirements overlap — but you’ll need serious floor space: think 240 gallons or more of footprint for two adult rays, over a soft sand bed with pristine water.
